Psalm 102
A Prayer of one afflicted, when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the LORD.
Hear my prayer, O LORD;
let my cry come to you!
Do not hide your face from me
in the day of my distress!
Incline your ear to me;
answer me speedily in the day when I call!
For the Lord builds up Zion;
he appears in his glory;
he regards the prayer of the destitute
and does not despise their prayer.
The children of your servants shall dwell secure;
their offspring shall be established before you. (Ps. 102:1–2,16–17, 28)
Suffering comes in many shapes and sizes. Perhaps we’re betrayed by a dear friend or we receive a scary diagnosis or face the death of a loved one. We might battle chronic illness or struggle with financial hardship. Sometimes we face more than one of these struggles simultaneously. Because we live in a world broken by sin, no one escapes suffering. The question is, how will we respond when it comes?
When we suffer, there’s a temptation to walk away from God. We wonder, If God is really good, if he really loves me, why would he let this happen? Or maybe we question whether He exists at all thinking, If God were real, he would have stopped this. Suffering can bring up tough questions, but we won’t find answers by walking away. Psalms of lament help us turn to God in suffering, bringing him our grief and hard questions, pleading with him to act on our behalf, and ultimately resting in his character and promises.
When we’re suffering, it can be hard to pray. Maybe we can’t find the words to express our thoughts and feelings, or we’re afraid that what we really think might not be appropriate to say to God. That’s why I love the psalms of lament. They give us vulnerable and honest words to express our suffering. And because they’re part of God’s holy, inspired word, we can be confident they’ll help us rightly approach the Lord. Psalm 102 doesn’t name its author. Instead, the superscript says, “A prayer of one afflicted, when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the Lord.” Whether we’re suffering now, have suffered in the past, or will suffer in the future, we’re all the “afflicted one” at some point, and Psalm 102 can help us turn to God. If you’re not currently in a season of suffering, let this psalm give you compassion for those who are and prepare you to suffer well in the future.
When we suffer, it can be tempting to isolate ourselves, thinking no one understands. While the details of our suffering may be unique, the experience of suffering is common to humanity—and so is the answer to our suffering. The afflicted one writing Psalm 102 joins his voice with other suffering psalmists because he knows he needs to turn to the Lord in his suffering just like they have. He also understands that God’s response to his suffering is part of a larger story of God caring for his people. Though our suffering may seem never-ending, only God is eternal. Once again we afresh directed to our Lord Jesus who understands our sufferings. Having suffered for us in our place to bring about our ultimate rescue and healing. He suffered what He did not deserve so that we would receive what we do not deserve; but what He delights to give. And our present sufferings as painful as they are - He promises that He’s working all things for the good of his people as we move toward that final day when he will return and undo death and suffering forever.
Thank you once again for faithfully praying for us and for the work of the Lord here in Fiji and throughout the South Pacific. These past weeks have been particularly full, with visiting teams, school ministries, gospel outreach, optical clinics, Bible College classes, and many opportunities to personally speak with people about the Lord Jesus Christ.
As we look back, we are conscious that it is the Lord who opens doors, provides strength, prepares hearts, and causes His Word to bear fruit. We are thankful for what He has allowed us to see and ask that you would join us in giving thanks and praying for the seed that has been sown.
Glasshouse Christian School Ministry Team
It was wonderful to once again welcome our friends from Glasshouse Christian College in Queensland, Australia, and especially to be reunited with Donna, Ross, Jaq, Syd, and others whom we have come to know and love over many years of partnership.
The team ministered alongside us throughout July and were involved in youth programs, children’s clubs, kids devotions, Bible teaching, painting projects, and food parcel distributions. We are thankful for the many doors the Lord opened for them to enter schools and communities and speak with children and young people about the Lord Jesus.
One of the great encouragements of these visits is seeing relationships that have developed over many years. The team does not simply come to complete a program and leave. Friendships have been formed with our staff, students, churches, children, and families, and each time they return those relationships continue to deepen.
Please pray for all those who heard the Word of God. We know that we can speak, teach, distribute literature, and love those whom the Lord places before us, but ultimately it is the Holy Spirit who gives spiritual life. Pray that the seed sown during these weeks would bring forth fruit.
We are also thankful for the Lord’s protection over the team and for the strength He gave throughout a very busy schedule. We pray that He would use their time in Fiji not only in the lives of those they served, but also in the hearts of the Glasshouse students themselves, deepening their love for Christ, His Church, and the work of the gospel.
Another Opportunity to Speak About Christ
The Lord once again opened an unexpected door through the Philotical Podcast. I was invited back for another conversation and given the opportunity to speak about Christ and the Christian faith on this platform.
We are thankful for opportunities like this because they allow the gospel to reach people whom we may never personally meet and who perhaps would never enter a church. Please pray that the Lord would be honoured through what was said and that He would use these conversations to cause people to consider Christ, their standing before God, and the salvation that is found in Him.

Fiji Bible College and Vocational Training
Please continue to remember our students at Fiji Bible College and the Ambassadors Vocational School as they approach their mid-semester break. Pray for them as they complete assessments and continue their classes, and please remember our lecturers as they prepare, teach, and serve the students.
Our desire has never simply been that students would pass examinations or accumulate theological knowledge, but that through their studies they would increasingly know the God of the Bible, love Christ, understand His Word, and be equipped to faithfully serve His Church.
Please also remember our School of Evangelism completing their Certifcate III and part-time Fiji Bible College students. At the beginning of each month, our part-time Certificate IV students undertake a week-long intensive, and this month they studied Summary of Christian Doctrine. Our Diploma students undertake similar intensives every second month.
We are thankful that these different programs allow people who cannot relocate to our residential campus to receive biblical training while remaining within their families, churches, and communities, or for those within churches who want to further their understanding of the Bible. Please pray that the Lord would use these programs to strengthen His people and bring glory to His name.
Christian Helps Optical Mission
Thank you especially for praying for the Christian Helps Optical Mission, which took place from 25 July to 2 August. The team travelled to five different locations throughout western Fiji, providing free eye examinations and prescription glasses to people who, in many cases, have little access to this kind of care.
By the conclusion of the outreach, the team had completed 1,122 eye tests and dispensed 987 pairs of prescription glasses. We are very thankful for the provision of the glasses from BarnabasAid Australia.
As thankful as we are for those numbers, what encouraged us most were the opportunities to share the gospel. Approximately 2,400 gospel tracts and 1,122 copies of the Gospels were distributed. The Lord also allowed us to have hundreds of personal conversations with patients and their families.
We were able to explain that our greatest need goes far deeper than our physical needs. We are sinners who cannot reconcile ourselves to a holy God, yet in His mercy God sent His Son. The Lord Jesus lived the life we could never live, died upon the cross for sinners to die the death we deserve, and rose triumphantly from the grave. In Him there is forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
During the outreach, several dozen people made professions of faith in Christ. It was wonderful to sit with people as they acknowledged their sin, recognised that they had no hope in themselves, and called upon the Lord for mercy because of what Jesus accomplished upon the cross.
We recognise that professions of faith are not simply statistics to report. The Lord alone knows the heart, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives life. Please pray for these individuals—that their professions would prove genuine and that the Word sown would take deep root and bring forth lasting fruit.
Please also pray for those who heard but did not respond. Perhaps months or even years from now the Lord will bring these conversations or portions of Scripture back to their minds.
We thank the Lord for every person who served, donated equipment and glasses, prayed, and helped make this outreach possible. Our prayer for Christian Helps remains that the Lord would enable us both to show genuine compassion toward those who suffer and to faithfully point people to the One who can meet their greatest need—the Lord Jesus Christ.
Looking Ahead — Master of Arts in Biblical Studies
Please continue to pray for our upcoming Master of Arts in Biblical Studies intensive, running from 4–15 August. The program exists to equip those already serving in gospel ministry with a deeper understanding of Scripture and strengthen them for faithful service in Christ’s Church.
Please pray for Dr. Arthur Adams, Dean of the Master’s Program, as he teaches Old Testament Biblical Exposition, and for Mr. Barry Frew, who will lecture on Biblical Leadership and Management. Pray also for our returning and new students.
Our prayer is not simply that they would increase in knowledge, but that they would grow in wisdom, humility, holiness, and love for Christ, becoming more faithful servants of His Word.
Labasa VBS and Mission Outreach
Please also pray for our upcoming mission trip to Labasa. Approximately a dozen members of our local national team will travel there to conduct a week-long VBS and outreach in partnership with the local church.
Please pray that the Lord would prepare the team and enable them by His Spirit to serve with humility, love, endurance, and boldness. Above all, pray for the children, young people, and families who will hear the Word of God—that the Lord would prepare their hearts and that Christ would be clearly presented.
Please also pray for the local church. We pray that this would be a sweet time of fellowship, friendship, encouragement, and serving together, and that the ministry would strengthen the work already taking place in Labasa.
Prayer for God’s Continued Provision
We ask that you would continue to make the financial needs of AFC(SP) a matter of earnest prayer.
Throughout this year the Lord has faithfully sustained us, often in remarkable ways, and we are deeply thankful for those who have sacrificially given. Humanly speaking, we continue to face a considerable shortfall within our ministry budget, but we look to the Lord who has sustained this ministry for almost sixty years. He has not changed, and He knows every need before us.
Please pray that the Lord would continue to provide and bring others alongside us who share a heart for Christ, His Church, and the proclamation of the gospel throughout Fiji and the South Pacific.
We are especially thankful for an important answer to prayer concerning our friends in the United States. The Lord has now opened a new avenue through Central Missionary Clearinghouse (CMC)through which our American partners can support the ministry with tax-deductible giving.

As we look back over these weeks, we have much for which to thank the Lord. As we look ahead, we remain dependent upon Him. Please pray that we would be faithful, that Christ would be magnified, that His Word would go forth, and that many would come to know the Lord Jesus.
